Monday 31st December 2007A Brand New StartIt's New Year's Eve! Tomorrow sees the start of 2008 and, of course, Euro changeover day in Cyprus with the Euro becoming Cyprus's official currency. Are you ready? Quick conversionsMany ATMs across Cyprus should be distributing Euro notes from this evening - and certainly from the morning of New Year's Day - and even though it's a national holiday, one bank branch in each city will be open from 11:00 to 14:00 to serve those wishing to exchange their Cyprus Pounds for Euros. The conversion rate is set at €1 = £0.585274. From Tuesday, all non-cash payments such as cards payments, standing orders and bank transfers will be carried out in Euros. Be aware that a cheque will not be valid unless it is made out in Euros. Cash will be accepted until the end of the month (although your change will be in Euros!). While items will still be priced in both currencies, people in European countries that have already made the switch found the faster they got to grips with the Euro's value the better.
